Recently, I have decided to positively step further into the inclusivity domain of the Academies work. I’ve always thought of myself as an inclusive person/leader yet accept my continual responsibility to change thoughts and behaviours to counter conscious and unconscious bias.
I’ve stepped up my reading which has included White Fragility by Robin Diangelo and a re-read of Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. I’ve also taken two symbiotic mentoring relationships following a presentation at our regional NHS BAME Women’s Summit.
Following the report ‘Men as Allies’, published in March by Health and Care Women Leaders Network, a group of men colleagues from the Academy network have met to discuss how we demonstrate our allyship to women colleagues although these supportive behaviours and actions are equally relative to all relationship of difference and sameness.
Like everyone, I sometimes get caught up in the complexity which exist in our health care systems, although it is basically ‘people helping others in time of need’ – a positive, inclusive common cause which is why I joined the NHS!
